Who We Are

Steps of Hope Sierra Leone (SOH-SL) is a community-based, nonprofit, nonpartisan, and nonreligious organization established in Makeni, Bombali District. We mobilize families, schools, communities, local leaders, businesses, civil society organizations, government institutions, and development partners to remove practical barriers that prevent vulnerable children from attending and completing school.

We serve school-age children experiencing challenges such as long or unsafe journeys, inadequate footwear, school-day hunger, insufficient learning materials, disability-related access barriers, poverty, displacement, caregiver loss, and other serious family hardships.

Steps of Hope Sierra Leone exists because no child’s education should be interrupted simply because the journey is too far, the child lacks suitable shoes, or the family cannot afford food and essential school supplies. Through footwear, nutritious meals, learning essentials, safe-access assistance, attendance monitoring, referrals, and family-centered support, we help children arrive at school safe, prepared, healthy, and ready to learn.

Every aspect of our work is guided by dignity, fairness, inclusion, safeguarding, accountability, and the best interests of the child. We identify needs responsibly, protect children’s privacy, collaborate with families and schools, and provide support without discrimination, exploitation, or public humiliation. Our goal is not only to meet immediate needs but also to strengthen the community relationships and support systems that help children remain in school and pursue a hopeful future.

Our history/Story

Steps of Hope Sierra Leone emerged from a simple but urgent concern: too many children travel long distances to school while facing hunger, unsafe routes, inadequate footwear, and insufficient learning materials. These challenges can leave children tired, injured, late, unable to concentrate, or discouraged from attending school consistently.

The organization was created as a practical, community-centered response. By bringing together families, schools, local leaders, businesses, volunteers, government institutions, and development partners, Steps of Hope works to remove the everyday barriers that can interrupt a child’s education.

Our name reflects both the journey and its promise. “Steps” represents the physical steps children take each day—sometimes across difficult terrain and under challenging conditions—to reach school. “Hope” represents what becomes possible when children can learn safely and with dignity: confidence, opportunity, independence, and a brighter future.

Every pair of shoes, nutritious meal, learning kit, safe route, referral, and supportive partnership can move a child closer to completing school and achieving their potential. At Steps of Hope Sierra Leone, we believe every step toward school should be a step toward hope.
